This is the text copy of the introductory devotion I presented in my stream of Prose & Codes on Monday, January 27, 2025. You can watch/listen to the highlight on Twitch by clicking here.
Every good story, arguably, has a Beginning, Middle, and an End. The art of storytelling is a core component of our existence, and it was given to us by our Creator so that we might also create and teach others. This is my introduction to my 2025 Extra Life theme of Stories, a devotion series for discussing The Word, and today we’re focusing on In The Beginning.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. –John 1:1-5
If this is your first time hearing this scripture, the Word being referenced is Jesus. God is three persons in one: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit – the trinity. They are separate parts of the whole we call God. Jesus is referred to as the Word in other parts of the Bible as well. In Genesis, when God speaks–things begin to exist. Can you imagine if you simply spoke something and it began to exist? This is the power of our Creator, and Jesus gave His life to save us!
The Story presented in the Bible is about God–who He is, everything He does, and His promises to those who follow Him. It uses examples of people throughout the ages, but it is never really about those people. They are the faithful, the faithless, the saved, and the lost–all to tell the greatest story ever told.
My aim this year is not just to talk about literature and books and the stories that can be found in video games–of which there are an endless number–but also to talk about the gospel and how the stories presented to us in scripture can shape our everyday life. As stated in 2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
I will have devotions which tie in to the games I stream this year, just as I started back in November with Souls Week, and I hope that I can show you how The Word can apply to your life and guide you through both the good and the bad.
“Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.”
–Proverbs 16:20
God, thank you so much for every listener hearing my words today, whether they’re watching the stream or checking out the video at a later time. I pray that everyone listening might open their hearts to your Word and hear the truth within it. Help me be the light for those who are lost, and a support for my fellow Christians walking in obedience. Amen.
