Wishlist Wednesday: The 7th Guest Remake

On Wishlist Wednesdays I share game titles from my various gaming wishlists. I share screenshots and video from the developer, talk about my expectations, and generally just ramble about why the title made it onto my list in the first place. This week's choice is The 7th Guest Remake by Vertigo Games.

WHY I WANT IT

The original game was published in 1993 and was a cornerstone of my early PC gaming experience in the comfort of my own home (and not the school computer lab). I had the CD-ROM that was sold by itself in just the jewel case, and it didn't take long for me to build up a collection of notepad scraps inside it with puzzle solutions as I progressed through the game. I loaned the game to my best friends in exchange for borrowing Torin's Passage. I loaned it out again when I was in college--and never got it back. I re-acquired it from Steam when it became available there, and I am probably going to pick up the 25th Anniversary Edition on GOG at some point (because DRM-free is increasingly important to me).

So why am I interested in a remake? I'm not sure I can adequately explain the thrill of solving the puzzles, the magic that was live-action sequences inside a PC game in the mid-90's, or the unraveling of the mystery of Henry Stauf's 7th guest. The original game holds this very special place for most PC gamers--it hearkens back to when PC gaming was really starting to evolve and up the ante. This was a point-and-click adventure game, but it didn't hold your hand. It had some sappy or silly jokes, but also some jaw-dropping surprises. It wasn't predictable and walked the line between haunted puzzles and sinisterly supernatural.

This remake is both a love letter to the original and an invitation for all of us to return to our childhood experience with a touch of the nostalgia improved with modernized graphics and new actors. The trailer alone indicates the mystery is much deeper and the characters interact more--that alone is intriguing enough for me to want to have it and play it. If you've followed my blog long enough, you know that in addition to The Lords of Magic being my first PC game, I was also playing games like The 7th Guest, Torin's Passage, King's Quest, and the MYST series. What the graphics couldn't do, our imaginations certainly did -- giving us an immersive experience without fancy tech or the sharpest graphics. (That said, I should mention that if you purchase this Remake on PS5 or Steam, you'll also get access to the VR version of the original. You know, for extra immersion in these trying times. It goes the other way, too--if you already have the VR version, you'll get this Remake!)

Did I mention that, at the time of writing this, the Remake is being released tomorrow? You can bet all nine coffins in the crypt that I'm buying it as soon as I can! And while it isn't a D&D game, it's very tempting to stream it for Extra Life as a bonus stream. Who doesn't want to learn about Henry Stauf's lifelike dolls?

If you want to explore the remade mansion for yourself, you can wishlist it on Steam here!

If that isn't enough to pique your interest, then this probably isn't your genre -- and that's okay! Check back next time for another title and let me know what you think of my selection!
