Learning LOTRO: Lesson 59 - Creature: Gredbyg

In this series, I talk about various aspects of The Lord of the Rings Online. This series is meant for newcomers, but may also help veteran players find more to love about the game.

It's time to discuss another Creature in Lord of the Rings Online, and it may just make your skin crawl: gredbyg! Mostly found underground, the gredbyg have spread far enough to sometimes be found aboveground as well. Ranging anywhere from placid puppy-sized beetles to battle-ready warriors and bloated queens the size of draft horses, this entry will cover the basics about these bugs in Middle-earth!

Learning LOTRO: Lesson 56 - Creature: Merrevail

In this series, I talk about various aspects of The Lord of the Rings Online. This series is meant for newcomers, but may also help veteran players find more to love about the game.

Welcome to a new sub-series of Learning LOTRO: Creatures! I have wanted to write this entry for a VERY long time because it's about one of my favorite creatures that can ONLY be found in The Lord of the Rings Online... merrevail! If you aren't familiar with that word, it's possible your characters aren't yet level 40, you haven't survived The Delving of Frór, or you haven't visited Angmar. If so, let's explore the species together!

Learning LOTRO: Lesson 54 - Emotes

In this series, I talk about various aspects of The Lord of the Rings Online. This series is meant for newcomers, but may also help veteran players find more to love about the game.

This variety of visual cosmetic is a handy way for players to express themselves in all manner of in-game experiences: breathe fire at an enemy, blow a kiss to your crush, salute your captain, slap someone with a fish. All of these are examples of emotes you can collect and use in The Lord of the Rings Online!

Learning LOTRO: Lesson 53 - Reflecting Pools

In this series, I talk about various aspects of The Lord of the Rings Online. This series is meant for newcomers, but may also help veteran players find more to love about the game.

Welcome to the beginning of Year 2! To kick off the new year of entries, I thought it apropos to explain the strange-looking structures called Reflecting Pools in The Lord of the Rings Online. These objects allow players to revisit instances that they have already played through, assist others in their Fellowship, and earn barter tokens to trade in for rewards.

Learning LOTRO: Lesson Fifty-One - Quest Packs & Expansions

In this series, I talk about various aspects of The Lord of the Rings Online. This series is meant for newcomers, but may also help veteran players find more to love about the game.

Back in the very first entry of this series (#1: What Is It?), I gave brief descriptions about each of the 7 expansions available at that time. Now that you know a lot more about the game, this entry is going to outline those Expansions in greater detail as well as the Quest Packs that are in between or included.

In this series, I talk about various aspects of The Lord of the Rings Online. This series is meant for newcomers, but may also help veteran players find more to love about the game.

Not sure where to find information about something in The Lord of the Rings Online? Something more advanced than Learning LOTRO has covered so far? I got you. Here's a brief collection of helpful links to guides and resources on various topics from our amazing game community! There are probably a lot more, but I stuck with some basics compiled with the help of a kinmate (thanks, Resolina!).

Learning LOTRO: Lesson Forty-Nine - Elevenses for Extra Life

In this series, I talk about various aspects of The Lord of the Rings Online. This series is meant for newcomers, but may also help veteran players find more to love about the game.

When it became apparent to me last year that I was likely going to pass my initial Extra Life goal of $1,000, I began making stretch goals. The easy choice for $1100 was Elevenses, which every good Tolkien nerd is familiar with -- along with a lot of other people around the world. For this special entry of Learning LOTRO, I share a bit of knowledge about Elevenses and consume some traditional fare as well!

Special thank-you to: Everyone who donated to my Extra Life page in 2020. Without you, this entry wouldn't exist, and hundreds of kids at Children's National in D.C. wouldn't be benefitting from your generosity. Thank you for helping me to be a hero for the kids!

Learning LOTRO: Lesson Forty-Eight - Class Poll Discussed

In this series, I talk about various aspects of The Lord of the Rings Online. This series is meant for newcomers, but may also help veteran players find more to love about the game.

In February of 2020, I decided I needed to infuse some Lord of the Rings Online content into my blog because it's been my primary MMO for 8 years and there isn't a game I know better. Since the endgame content, raids, trait trees, and annual events all had plenty of coverage, I thought it would be good to get back to basics for the ever-present crop of new players that give the game a try and are left to fend for themselves in a sea of information. I put out a poll asking people to rank their favorite to least favorite classes and said I would cover them in whatever order resulted. As I'm wrapping up a full year of Learning LOTRO, I thought it was a good time to finally discuss those poll results and how it helped to shape the series.

Learning LOTRO: Lesson Forty-Seven - Warden Class Quests

In this series, I talk about various aspects of The Lord of the Rings Online. This series is meant for newcomers, but may also help veteran players find more to love about the game.

Learning LOTRO: Lesson Forty-Six - Cosmetic Pets

In this series, I talk about various aspects of The Lord of the Rings Online. This series is meant for newcomers, but may also help veteran players find more to love about the game.

One of the most popular features in MMOs is, hands down, cosmetic pets. Sometimes they're tiny versions of NPCs or mounts, sometimes they're crazy or thematic for a festival, and other times they're just... creatures! Whichever variety floats your boat, today we're going to talk about the ones in The Lord of the Rings Online and how you can collect them!

Learning LOTRO: Lesson Forty-Five - Monster Racial Traits

In this series, I talk about various aspects of The Lord of the Rings Online. This series is meant for newcomers, but may also help veteran players find more to love about the game.

A second entry? Yep! It's another double header today! Since the first entry was about PvMP, it only made sense to do a brief entry about Monster Racial Traits as well. Each of the Monster classes has the same number of base traits, but each has their own role to play in a group setting -- and that's not even getting into all of the traits and corruptions an individual can choose to slot when customizing and improving the character. So let's take a look at the Racial Traits!

Please note: Many of the images used in this entry are taken from the LOTRO wiki owing to the fact that I don't habitually participate in PvMP myself, only just enough to present the basics to you.

Learning LOTRO: Lesson Forty-Four - Monster Play & PvMP

In this series, I talk about various aspects of The Lord of the Rings Online. This series is meant for newcomers, but may also help veteran players find more to love about the game.

This topic has been a long time coming! It was originally slated for sometime in December, but there were some real life delays. In this entry, we're going to talk about The Lord of the Rings Online's version of PvP (Player vs. Player): PvMP (Player vs. Monster Player). Often also called Freep vs. Creep, this unique setup allows players to take on the role of various Monster races in designated areas of conflict, called Monster Play

Please note: Many of the images used in this entry are taken from the LOTRO wiki owing to the fact that I don't habitually participate in PvMP myself, only just enough to present the basics to you.

Learning LOTRO: Lesson Thirty-Eight - The Auction House

In this series, I talk about various aspects of The Lord of the Rings Online. This series is meant for newcomers, but may also help veteran players find more to love about the game.

What better follow-up to last week's entry about Crafting Guilds than to discuss the place where you can sell your crafted items? This week I'll be covering all of the basics about The Auction House: what it is, how to use it, the instructions you no longer receive for it, and why it too is an important part of the player economy in The Lord of the Rings Online.
